A set of preparatory actions will be done to start implementing the complex wolf population surveillance. All activities within this action relate directly to Action C.1, which is the actual implementation of the monitoring, and, where relevant, to Action C.3 - in this action hunters and volunteers are directly included in monitoring activities.
We will establish a national surveillance system for conservation status of the wolf population. It will include governmental institutions concerned with nature protection, wildlife management and agriculture, as well as academic institutions and non-governmental organizations.
Complex monitoring of an elusive species like the wolf requires a large number of people in the field, which is prohibitively expensive using professional personnel. Opportunistic non-invasive genetic sampling and intensive non-invasive sampling through snow tracking are complementary methods.
